Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the second phase of development at the Vizhinjam International Port on 24 January.
The event will also mark the formal launch of export-import cargo operations and the opening of a newly built port road linking Vizhinjam directly to the national highway bypass.
The next phase of expansion, being executed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, is expected to dramatically scale up the port’s capacity.
Once completed, Vizhinjam’s annual container-handling capability will rise from 1.5 million TEUs to 5 million TEUs, positioning it among the country’s leading transhipment hubs.
Key infrastructure upgrades include extending the berth length from 800 metres to 2,000 metres and expanding the breakwater from 3 km to 4 km.
Plans also include the construction of a railway yard, a multipurpose berth, a liquid cargo terminal and a tank farm. Rail connectivity will be developed through a 10.7 km line featuring a tunnel, while enhanced road access will be supported by a proposed cloverleaf interchange.
Vizhinjam’s recent recognition as an Inland Container Port and Depot is expected to further boost trade and allied activities, including tourism-related infrastructure and cruise operations.
The port’s rapid rise has already drawn global attention. In just one year of commercial operations, Vizhinjam exceeded its container-handling targets, accommodating more than 1.325 million containers.
It has also set records by berthing several ultra-large container vessels, including ships that had never previously docked at any Asian port.
