US President Donald Trump wrote to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, declaring he no longer feels "an obligation to think purely of peace" after missing out on the Nobel Peace Prize.
The letter, forwarded to multiple European ambassadors in Washington by National Security Council staff, directly linked Trump's intensifying demands for Greenland to what he perceives as a Nobel snub.
In the message, Trump claimed he deserved the prize for "having stopped eight wars plus" and stated that whilst peace would "always be predominant", he could now focus on "what is good and proper for the United States of America".
The Norwegian government confirmed the letter's authenticity to local media. Trump went on to assert that "the world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland", questioning Denmark's sovereignty over the Arctic territory.
Prime Minister Støre clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government.
The letter comes after Trump announced tariffs of 10 per cent on eight European nations from 1 February, rising to 25 per cent on 1 June, until an agreement is reached for the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland.
Norway is amongst the targeted countries, alongside Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the UK.
The controversy intensified after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, last year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, presented Trump with her medal at the White House.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee swiftly stated that prizes cannot be transferred or reassigned, even symbolically.
European leaders issued a joint statement condemning the tariff threats, with eight NATO members declaring they "stand in full solidarity" with Denmark and Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that "Europe will not be blackmailed".
