India’s 508 km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, which will connect 12 stations across Maharashtra and Gujarat, is now advancing towards full electric traction.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared an update on social media, highlighting the pace of work on the installation of overhead electrification infrastructure.
In a post on X, he said, “Make in India powers the Bullet Train project. Installation of overhead electrification masts is progressing well on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project.”
Officials involved in the project said the installation of Overhead Electrification (OHE) masts marks a crucial phase in preparing the corridor for high-speed electric train operations.
These vertical steel structures support overhead electric wires and ensure the correct height, alignment and tension required for a continuous and reliable power supply to trains running at very high speeds.
The OHE masts are being installed along key sections of the alignment, including elevated viaduct stretches built at considerable heights above ground level.
Once completed, they will support a 2×25 kV overhead traction power system designed specifically for high-speed rail operations.
According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), more than 20,000 masts, ranging in height from 9.5 metres to 14.5 metres, will be erected across the corridor.
The electrification system will include overhead wires, earthing arrangements, fittings and associated accessories essential for safe and efficient train movement.
To ensure uninterrupted traction power, a network of Traction Substations (TSS) and Distribution Substations (DSS) is being developed along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
The bullet train is expected to have its first inaugural run on 15 August 2027.
