Nitin Nabin was formally appointed as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at a ceremony held at the party headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday (20 January), The Hindu reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former BJP president J P Nadda, and Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nitin Gadkari were among the leaders who greeted Nabin during the event.
K Laxman, the Returning Officer for BJP organisational polls, declared the results of the elections and handed over the certificate of election to 45-year-old Nitin Nabin, making him the youngest ever to hold the party’s top post.
A five-term MLA from Bihar, Nabin was elected as BJP’s national president on Monday (19 January), following a day-long nomination process in which he was the sole candidate.
“Today is a very historic occasion, when our young, energetic, and talented Nitin Nabin is taking charge as the National President of the world’s largest political party, the BJP. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him on my behalf and on behalf of crores of workers,” Mr. Nadda said at the ceremony.
Laxman noted that 37 sets of nomination papers had been filed in Nabin’s favour and were found valid, underscoring broad support within the party.
Nabin had earlier been appointed national working president of the BJP on 14 December, after an 18-month search.
Born in 1980, the same year the BJP was founded, Nitin Nabin becomes the party’s 12th president.
Observers note that his tenure will begin amid tricky elections and internal challenges, with a focus on strengthening the party’s organisational structure and engaging India’s youth in line with Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives.
