In a pointed diplomatic exchange diplomatic engagement on Monday (19 January), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar used his meeting with Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in New Delhi to underscore India’s core concerns on regional security and geopolitical fairness.
Jaishankar reiterated India’s consistent position that “selective targeting” of New Delhi over its foreign policy choices — especially on the Russia-Ukraine conflict — is “unfair and unjustified,” a message he said he had repeatedly conveyed in global capitals including New York and Paris.
A central thrust of Jaishankar’s remarks was a caution to Warsaw against actions that could indirectly bolster terrorist infrastructure around India, a pointed reference to Pakistan following recent diplomatic engagements between Poland and Islamabad.
He urged Poland to adopt zero tolerance for terrorism and not to “help fuel terrorist infrastructure” in India’s neighbourhood, underscoring that investment or cooperation that could benefit terror networks would be counterproductive to shared interests.
The exchange comes against the backdrop of deepening India-Poland strategic partnership, elevated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Warsaw in 2024, with expanding cooperation across trade, defence and people-to-people ties.
Jaishankar’s firm stance marked a clear diplomatic signal: India values its European partnerships but remains uncompromising on matters of sovereignty, regional security, and the fight against terrorism.
The talks reviewed the Action Plan 2024-28 to realise the full potential of the India-Poland strategic partnership, with discussions covering cooperation in trade, investment, defence and security, clean technologies and digital innovation.
Poland is among India's largest trading partners in Central Europe, with both countries seeking to deepen economic and people-to-people links amid significant global churn.
